Ethnic vs. Standard Rhinoplasty: Finding Your Perfect Fit

People get rhinoplasties, also referred to as nose jobs, for a multitude of reasons. Some get them to achieve facial balance by getting their desired nose shape. While others get them to help with medical issues, such as a deviated septum or nose injuries.

However, beyond the standard rhinoplasty, there is another type that preserves one’s ethnic features. And, this type is referred to as Ethnic Rhinoplasty.

Keep reading to get more details on how Ethnic Rhinoplasty differs from Standard Rhinoplasty and its importance for people with ethnic features.

🏥 Understanding Ethnic Rhinoplasty: Definition and Importance

Unlike traditional rhinoplasty, ethnic rhinoplasty is more personalized to complement the ethnic background of the patient. Whether it be Africans, Asians, or Middle Easterners, each one has a distinct cultural identity and features. Therefore, the standard rhinoplasty, which is typically suitable for Caucasian noses, isn’t the ideal option for them.

As each ethnicity has a distinctly different nasal structure, this rhinoplasty surgery is also modified to offer results that promote facial harmony. In some ways, this type of nose job helps with the preservation and even enhancement of one’s ethnic features.

👃 Anatomical Differences Across Ethnic Groups

The preservation of one’s ethnic features is at the core of Ethnic Rhinoplasty plastic surgery procedures. Let’s look at the anatomical differences across various ethnic groups.

Middle Eastern

People with a Middle Eastern background generally have high nose bridges (may have a hump). Furthermore, the nasal tip is pointed or slightly drooping, with narrow nasal openings and moderate skin thickness. The nasal cartilage is thick and strong.

South Asians

The South Asian noses have varying nose bridge heights with droopy or bulbous nasal tips. The nostrils have moderate width and the skin is moderately thick with ample sebaceous glands. The nasal cartilage has moderate thickness.

East Asians

The nasal bridge for East Asians is short, low, and has a flat appearance. Moreover, the tip is rounder and doesn’t project outwards too much. The nostrils are moderately wide, and the nasal skin thickness ranges from moderate to thick. The nasal cartilage is comparatively weak.

Africans

African nasal bridges are low and broad, and lie flat with wide nasal tips that do not project outwards too much. The nasal openings are wide, with thick overlying skin and weak nasal cartilage.

Caucasians

Caucasian noses have a high nasal bridge (at times with a hump). The nasal tip is clearly defined with narrow to moderate nasal openings. The overlying skin has moderate thickness, and the nasal cartilage support is strong.

💉 Specialized Techniques in Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Some of the techniques in Ethnic Rhinoplasty include the following:

Dorsum Projection

This technique is performed to bring balance to the overall facial structure. Instead of fully transforming one’s look, it preserves and accentuates the ethnic look. This technique focuses on the projection of the nose bridge, which is why individuals of Asian descent go with this procedure.

Aarplasty

The Alarplasty technique focuses on accentuating and narrowing wide nostrils, while maintaining the unique and natural ethnic facial framework.

Cartilage Grafting

This technique focuses on the use of cartilage taken from the patient’s ribs or ears to reshape or refine the patient’s nose. It is best for patients whose noses have a softer structure, and allows the nose to become more sculpted.

🙌 A Satisfied Patient’s Journey at the Estherian Clinic

Tiara from New York came to the Estherian Clinic to get her rhinoplasty from Dr. Cengizhan. She found our clinic through social media and had a video call beforehand with the team.

This is how Dr. Cengizhan described her facial aesthetics before the surgery:

“ She has an ethnic nose, which especially African American people have. Low nose root, bigger holes, risen nose tip. We usually obtain gristle from the rib and shape it in these type of operations. We should be giving the nose a little volume while shaping it. We make the nose wings thinner and rise the tip.

Tiara shares her experience with our clinic:

“Everybody is so family-oriented, everybody’s friendly. They checked up on me. The hotel where I’m staying is a 5-star.  Everybody’s just so friendly, nobody is rushing me. I just love it.”

Dr. Cengizhan describes the procedure post-surgery:

“She didn’t have enough gristle on her nose. So, we had to take some from her ribs. It was calculated before the operation, and we let her know. She was prepared for it, fortunately, we managed to obtain it. We made a nice shape. I hope she likes it as well.”

He goes on to say:

“The bones were quite wide and broad. We broke the bones and centerized them. In order to make the nose look lifted from the side-view, we supported this part with the gristle. Tip was a little down, we also lifted it up. One of the main problems was the wide nose holes, which we narrowed.”
