Types of Rhinoplasty – A Comprehensive Guide

Rhinoplasty has multiple types, and each one has a purpose. Understing these types and how they can impact the nose is crucial. In addition, being familiar with the rhinoplasty techniques can empower you to make educated decisions about your body. Not to mention, it can also help establish realistic expectations about your own rhinoplasty procedure. Stay with us as we break down the types of rhinoplasty in our comprehensive guide:

👃✨ Nasal surgery names and approaches (Types of Rhinoplasty)

There are various types of nasal surgeries, each depending on the medical indication and the anatomical structure requiring the surgery. We are listing a few of them below:

Rhinoplasty (cosmetic nose job)

A rhinoplasty, also commonly called a nose job, is one of the several nasal surgery options done for cosmetic purposes. The main purpose is to alter the nose contours for better aesthetics, but it may also help with enhancing the nose’s functionality for better breathing.

Septoplasty

Septoplasty is a nose surgery that has to do with treating a deviated septum to aid in better airflow through the nostrils for easy breathing. The septum, or the wall made of cartilage that divides the nostrils, is supposed to be straight, but in some people it’s more curved to the side instead of the centre. This makes the nasal passages narrower, making breathing harder.

Turbinate Reduction

The turbinates are bones inside the nose that aid in filtering and warming up air as it passes through the nose. Their enlargement can hinder their function, making one more susceptible to nasal congestion, and even develop conditions like sleep apnea in the long run.

In this procedure, the surgeon reduces the enlarged turbinate’s size to help the airflow through the nasal passages.

Revision nose job (secondary rhinoplasty)

As the name suggests, a revision nose job is a secondary rhinoplasty. It is done when the patient is not happy with the aesthetic outcome of their initial rhinoplasty after healing. Or, if the previous nose job had complications that affected the aesthetics or the functionality of the nose.

📌 This type of nose job has to be done only by the most experienced surgeons due to the complexity of the procedure.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Ethnic rhinoplasty is one of the rhinoplasty methods tailored to the unique features of the patient’s ethnicity. The purpose of this specialized rhinoplasty procedure is to design a nose for the patient that matches their cultural identity and ethnic features and looks as natural as possible.

Non-Surgical Rhinoplasty (filler rhinoplasty)

Non-surgical rhinoplasty is a non-invasive technique where dermal fillers are used to modify the nose’s shape to achieve the desired aesthetics. Furthermore, this technique is completely temporary and is used to acquire changes such as temporarily eliminating a bump in the nose, accentuating the tip, etc.

Functional rhinoplasty (endoscopic sinus surgery)

Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, or FESS, involves the use of an endoscope, camera, and light by the surgeon to inspect the interiors of the sinuses. The surgeon then uses tools to eliminate blockages or growths within the sinuses.

💊 Surgical approach differences

Here are the different surgical approaches to a nose job:

Open rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty involves completely removing the nose’s skin from the bone and cartilage for detailed visibility. This technique is employed for more complicated rhinoplasties.

Since the open rhinoplasty involves entirely lifting the nose’s skin, it helps the surgeon easily see all parts of the nose. However, one drawback is that it has an extended surgery time of up to 3 hours. It also may result in a scar, which usually fades over time.

The ideal patient for an open rhinoplasty is someone whose nose has a major deformity, such as a deviated septum. This type of rhinoplasty has both cosmetic and functional benefits.

Closed rhinoplasty

Closed rhinoplasty does not involve any incisions outside the nose. In this technique, the incisions are made inside the nose. This type of rhinoplasty heals faster as well and is only used for cosmetic procedures that are not complex at all.

This technique is much less invasive, and since it does not offer a very detailed view of the nasal anatomy, it also limits the surgeon’s ability to make too many changes. Hence why surgeons opt for this technique for simpler cases.

The patients best suited for this procedure are those who have minor problems with their nasal structure and want subtle changes. These changes may include smoothing a hump or making subtle changes to the tip.

The ideal candidates for rhinoplasty are healthy individuals with no major health conditions that can negatively impact their healing post-surgery.

🔍 Choosing the right approach

You have to consider the following factors when choosing the right approach to rhinoplasty:

  • Assess what your goals are for the procedure regarding the aesthetics you want, and if you want to improve your nose’s functionality as well.
  • Understand how both types of rhinoplasty work, their pros and cons, etc.
  • Choose a skilled surgeon who will analyze your skin and nose and explain the ideal approach for your case.
  • Make sure to check out the before-and-after photos of the surgeon’s work so you can know if they have experience handling cases like yours.
