Hair transplants are an excellent way to restore lost hair, whether the hair loss occurred due to hormonal imbalances or even stress. These results of a hair transplant are both seamless and help restore the patient’s confidence in their appearance. Moreover, hair transplants these days involve the use of highly advanced techniques to reduce discomfort and ensure natural-looking results. Between FUE and DHI hair transplant techniques, the DHI method uses a specialized implanting pen tool to implant the follicles. On the other hand, the FUE technique involves the placement of the hair follicles into pre-cut incisions. However, one main concern many have is about what happens after the transplant. This blog presents a case study of a hair transplant patient, documenting their progress over a span of 5 months post-procedure.
A 5-Month Timeline of a Real Hair Transplant Patient
The patient underwent a DHI transplant at the Estherian Clinic. This hair transplant type provides enhanced precision and less tissue trauma during the procedure.
Let’s have a closer look at their journey (including photos) and examine the 5-month hair transplant full results timeline:

One Week Post-Transplant
The first week after a transplant is a crucial period, as the follicles are still pretty new. Additionally, the tissue is sensitive. Hence, touching the scalp, exposure to direct sunlight, etc, can cause significant damage.
The first few days after the hair transplant involve extreme swelling. Also, after the first couple of days, the scalp forms a lot of scabbing. These scabs should not be picked at, as this can cause the grafts to get damaged.
Our patient’s head showed visible scabbing, which by the 7th day had begun to shed. At this point, the scalp is still a little sensitive but not as inflamed as it was right after the transplant.
Results After 3.5 Weeks of DHI Hair Transplant
The progress photos show us that the grafts are secure in their place. At this point, the patient’s scalp has also healed and is no longer as pink as it was.
However, this is one of the most important phases of the recovery period. Soon, the transplanted hairs will go into shock, which will cause hair loss.
7-Week Recovery Progress
By the 7th week, the shedding has stopped. However, at this point, while most of the hair has shed, fresh growth does not occur. We can see from the patient’s progress photo that his head looks very similar to how it was before he underwent the transplant.
In addition to this, the recipient area starts to look just as normal again. However, a very small number of tiny hairs start to appear. Although the real hair growth happens much later.

12-week Results
The 12-week hair growth after a hair transplant involves gradual but steady growth. The patient’s photo shows significant density due to new hair sprouting out. So, to answer the question of “how long does it take for hair to grow back?”, it starts within the first 3 months and might take up to 8 months to grow to its full density.

5 Months After the DHI Transplant Procedure
At the 5-month mark, we can already see most of the results of the transplant. The patient has had significantly more growth than before. However, this hair is still pretty delicate. You can expect the density to increase in the next few months.
What to Expect From Long-term Hair Transplant Results
1-year after your procedure, you can expect the hair to grow stronger and thicker. Since the hair has matured, it grows in a more natural angle and has a perfectly seamless fall.
